Juniper Mountain Camping Trip

We went on a quick camping trip to Juniper Mountain in Owyhee County on Friday.  My hubby got to do a little scouting for his elk tag this fall, the boys played in the dirt, and I had another chance to try some night time photography.  We left later than usual to avoid the heat so I was able to get several sunset photos as we drove down.  It's amazing how much the light changed in such a short period of time!

My 4 year old wanted to take pictures of the moon again so I got everything set up while they roasted marshmallows and then he got to come over and click the remote.  For not being a full moon, it definitely put out plenty of light.  The moon overpowered the Milky Way enough that it was much less prominent than I would have liked, but I was happy since these were my first real attempt at photographing it.  I also tried star trails for the first time!  I only got two decent shots before getting too tired to keep trying.  The exposures were close to 30 minutes each to capture the movement of the stars around the North Star.  The moon was bright enough to light up the trees!

Reynolds Creek

My hubby and I took a drive to Reynolds Creek in Owyhee County last month and I had a chance to get lots of photos with my new wide angle lens.  I made the poor guy stop the truck so many times that he may not take me again if I have my camera with me!

This was also one of my first attempts at an HDR (High Dynamic Range) image.  Basically, HDR is the merging of multiple exposures to get an image that will more accurately reflect the wide range of intensity levels seen by the human eye.  Without HDR, either the canyon would be properly exposed and the sky would be blown out or the sky would be properly exposed and the canyon would be almost completely dark.  I plan on working on this technique more in the future, so stay tuned...

And what drive out in a rural Idaho area would be complete without some rusty metal?  The color versions were nice, but these photos were just screaming for some warm black and white processing...

Hunting Eastern Idaho

I was able to spend a bit of quality one on one time with the hubby on a trip to eastern Idaho a few weeks ago.  He wanted to go hunting and I wanted to take photos, so we compromised and did both.  It was really nice being outdoors together and it was a beautiful day with one of the most amazing sunsets I've ever seen.  I ended up just sitting on the hill watching the clouds move across the horizon.

Enjoy!

This may be my favorite photo of our dog ever...

The clouds didn't really want to cooperate for silhouette shots, but I managed to get one that I liked.

The first time I've ever seen a moose in a potato field!  I have to give the credit to my hubby though, he called him in close enough that I could get a few shots with my camera!

The First 12

So here's my first batch of 12 new photos.  My hubby is always encouraging me to "leave those poor kids alone" and go take a few nature photos.  Since I'm attempting to try new things with Project 1210 I figured I may as well take his advice.

Wilson Springs  near our house is so nice in the evening.  It was a great chance to practice with backlighting.

Love this light!

The ducks avoided the camera as much as my kids...

Wilson Springs

I have fond memories of a certain pair of initials carved in a tree.  ;)  Love little reminders like this...

Guffey Bridge over the Snake River

I kind of have a thing for bridges.  Must be the engineer in me...

Flowers in Celebration Park

Couldn't help myself! I had to get at least one of the little monster!
